A birthday on the road.

Day 4 is not only day 4 of the holiday countdown...it is my birthday.

While my birthday is not ON Christmas...three weeks before Christmas might as well be ON Christmas.  Kids born in December should celebrate their birthdays in June.  (No amount of redoing, retyping and repositioning this sentence would make it justify left in my preview.)

When I was growing up we would sometimes celebrate my birthday at Thanksgiving.  Not on Thanksgiving but at some point during that weekend.  Why?  Maybe because company was still around.  However, that meant my actual birthday went by unrecognized.  Sucks when you're a kid. Still sort of does when you're an adult.

I think that my love of Advent calendars came from something that happened on my birthday, though.  When I was 8 a package arrived from my grandmother.  She made Advent calendars using red felt with a long string of red and white mint candies.  They were so awesome to an 8 year old! What a concept.  Besides tearing rings off of a chain at school we had never seen anything to help count down the endless days leading to Christmas.  My sister and I rehung candies on that thing probably until we left for college...or the felt simply wore away.

This year I will not complain about my birthday being near Christmas because I am (or should be since I have to write this in advance) in Vienna!  Visiting Christmas markets!  I mean, really, this makes up for all those years of my birthday being blurred with other holidays.

21 days.

Pam
